Thai beach resort commemorates 2004 tsunami

Phuket Island on Monday began a day of memorial ceremonies for more than 5,000 lives lost during the 2004 tsunami, with Buddhist, Christian and Muslim prayers at a Wall of Remembrance.

The rites were held at Mai Khao, on the northern part of the island, 700 kilometres south of Bangkok, Radio Thailand reported.
"We are like an experienced person who has survived a disaster," said Bang-orurat Shinaprayon, Phuket director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.//DPA
