The five Mathayom students (one boy and four girls) of Sam Khok School were on an engine boat ferrying across Chao Phraya River from their school to the Wat Samakkheeyaram Pier, in order to buy supplies for school activities at the Sam Khok Market, when torrents poured into the boat causing it to sink. All students and ferryman had to swim.
While the boy and other girl were rescued to safety by passersby, another girl Duangkamol Nilchoke, 14, was unconscious and rushed to Pathum Thani Hospital. However two other girls – Maleewan Khotsanthia, 14 and another student identified only as Waraporn – were missing. The ferryman Amnat Wikakanont, 37, took the opportunity of chaos to flee.
