Senator Prajit disqualified

The Election Commission on Tuesday ruled to disqualify senator Prajit Rojanaphruk on grounds that as voter, he failed to cast his ballot in a by-election in January, 2009.

The EC ruling is subjected to a mandatory review by the Supreme Court’s Elections Division.
Prajit, a former ambassador, was appointed to his seat in the upper chamber last year under the nomination of a professional guild “Saranithet Group”.
Should the high court endorse the disqualification, the group that sponsored his monination will likely face criminal proceedings for filing false statement. Prajit will also face a five-year ban from holding office.
