Pineapple planters plan to block all four lanes of Phetchakasem Highway in Prachuap Khiri Khan's Muang district tomorrow and continue their protest until the government agrees to allocate Bt800 million to buy their excess crops at Bt4 per kilogram.
As fruit shops and canneries will today stop buying pineapples indefinitely, the 7,800 pineapple farmers in the province, which produces some 100,000 tonnes a year, would suffer.
Surat Munitarawong, president of the national pineapple farmers’ association and the province’s pineapple farmers’ group, said yesterday that the planters from Prachuap Khiri Khan would gather with those from Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and Phetchaburi to cut off all road traffic at Ban Nong Hin Intersection in tambon Klong Wan.
