PM kicks off traditional New Year celebration in Chiang Mai

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra kicked off the northern traditional New Year celebration in her home province of Chiang Mai on Friday.

Yingluck chaired the ceremony launching the celebrations at the Tha Pae Gate at 7am.
Hundreds of supporters waited to greet her at the ceremony, with many giving her roses along the way.
Yingluck said she was very happy to join the northern celebration of Songkran and was happy to see so many people turning up to join the celebration and preserving the good northern tradition.
Later, Yingluck and her sister, Yaowapha Wongsawat, visited the people at the San Kampaeng Market.
Yingluck then visited her home district of San Kampaeng to pay respect to her deceased ancestors at the Rong Tham Samakkhit Temple. Again, many red-shirts waited to cheer and greet the prime minister at the temple.
