The three agencies are the Office of NonFormal and Informal Education (NFE), the Office of the Welfare Promotion Commission for Teachers and Educational Personnel (OTEP) and the Office of the Private Education Commission (OPEC).
Suchart gave no details whether the offices will keep their acronyms or be renamed.
Supervision of the new departments would fall under the ministry’s secretariat unlike the existing structure, which puts them under direct ministerial supervision. The change is in line with a ministry policy issued in 2003 that departments be organised in a corporate structure with the aim of improving efficiency.
Suchart said the Office of the Basic Education Commission was now undergoing internal reconstruction.
The NFE’s mission is to provide education to more than 10 million Thais who have not completed their compulsory education to the 12th grade. The overhaul will put in place a new curriculum that’s expected to be completed in eight month’s time.
NFE secretarygeneral Prasert Bunrueng said there are another 30 million Thais who are out of the educational loop and have yet to complete the 12th grade, and after the office is revamped, they’ll be served as well.
Permanent secretary Sasithara Phichaiharnnarong said the overhaul would give the three offices more independent authority. The changes will be formally approved by the ministry and sent for endorsement by the Cabinet after an internal ministry panel gives its okay.
