Hollande: 'I will be the president of all'

French president-elect Francois Hollande appealed Sunday for unity after a fraught contest against Nicolas Sarkozy.

"Too many divisions, too much hurt, too many ruptures, too many cuts have separated our citizens," he said.

"I will be the president of all," he told supporters in hiscentral stronghold of Correze. "Tonight there is just one France, one nation, united in the samedestiny."

He was "sure" that his presidential victory would be met with "relief" in many Europeancountries fed up with austerity as a solution to the eurozone's debtcrisis.

"Europe is also watching us, and I am sure that the moment theresult was declared, it was a relief and (a sign of) hope for manyEuropean countries, the idea that finally austerity will longer beinevitable," Hollande told his supporters in the city of Tulle.

Hollande said his "mission" was to add a "growth, jobs, prosperity" dimension to the European Union.
"This is what I will tell, as soon as possible, to our Europeanpartners, and first of all to Germany, in the name of the friendshipthat ties us and in the name of our common responsibility.
