Teachers in the south ask for tightening of security

Teachers in deep south call for increased security as school gets underway.

With the new semester starting this week, teachers in the deep south provinces on Monday called on authorities to tighten security measures.
Boonsom Thongsriplai, president of Federation of Teachers in three Southern provinces, said that most of the schools in Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat would re-open on Thursday and that many teachers have already returned to their schools to prepare for their classes.
“We have asked the security authorities to strengthen security measures for education personnel including teachers and students, as insurgents have increased attacks and the degree of violence has surged during the past months,” Boonsom said.
Teachers in the south should be careful and not negligent when travelling to and from schools, even though it appeared that the insurgents’ targets were government officials.
The insurgents usually instigated chaos during the opening of the new semester, Boonsom said, with the aim of destroying the spirit of educational personnel.
