Red shirts urge NHRC to look into 'substandard' medical treatment for inmates

A red-shirt group Monday called on the National Human Rights Commission to look into alleged substandard treatment of inmates following the death of Akong of Ampol Tungnoppakhun.

The group, Seri Rassadorn (Liberal Citizens), Monday submitted invitation cards to NHRC commissioners to attend the funeral of Ampol who died of cancer while serving his 20-year jail term. He was convicted in sending lese-majesty SMS messages to the personal secretary to former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.
Nitiwt Wansiri, a member of the group, told NHRC chairwoman Amara Pongkhapit that Ampol suffered from stomach ache but he was given only medicine against indigestion and was not taken good care after his symptom worsened.
Amara promised that the NHRC would look into medical treatment for inmates.
