The firms are eyeing a partnership in organic electroluminescence televisions to shorten development time by sharing production technologies, the Nikkei business daily reported.
They are aiming to commercialize the products by 2015, and the tie-up could eventually lead to joint production, the Nikkei said.
A partnership could signal turning point for Japan's electronics industry, which has lost market share to Korean companies, it said.
The report came after the two Sony and Panasonic posted record losses in the financial year that ended March 31.
Sony Corp recorded a fourth-straight annual loss of 456 billionyen (5.73 billion dollars), while Panasonic Corp posted lost 772 billion yen.//DPA
