U2's Bono to present Amnesty award to Aung San Suu Kyi

MONDAY, JUNE 18, 2012

Dublin - Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is set to arrive Monday in Dublin where U2 frontman Bono will present her with the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award.

 

As part of her first trip to Europe in 24 years, Suu Kyi will travel to Dublin from Norway, where she accepted the Nobel peace prize she was awarded in 1991 in recognition of her non-violent campaign for democracy and human rights.
 
During her visit, Suu Kyi will be greeted by Deputy Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore at Dublin airport Monday afternoon before visiting President Michael D Higgins at his official residence, Aras an Uachtarain.
 
Rock star Bono will present her with the award at a concert in her honour, which will also feature fellow human rights campaigner and musician Sir Bob Geldof.
 
The Nobel laureate is then due to make a public address in central Dublin and formally accept the Freedom of the City of Dublin she wasawarded in 2000.//DPA
