Thein Sein sets date to visit Thailand

Myanmar's President Thein Sein has set July 22 to 24 as the dates for his visit to Thailand following a postponement after pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi came to Thailand at the end of May.

During his visit, both sides are expected to reach agreement on cooperation in various fields and will sign a memorandum of understanding on technical cooperation, said Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Thani Thongpakdi.
President Thein Sein decided at the last minute to delay his visit to Bangkok in May for the World Economic Forum in Bangkok, as Aung San Suu Kyi was making a high profile visit to the forum.
Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul discussed the preparation of Thein Sein’s visit with his Myanmar counterpart Wunna Maung Lwin on the sidelines of the Asean meeting in Phnom Penh on Monday.
During the meeting, Thailand requested Myanmar to open four border checkpoints in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Kanchanaburi, Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai to connect with Myanmar’s Tanintharyi, Pyathuangsu, Shan State and Kayah State respectively.
Surapong also discussed the issue of Thai nationals who have been detained in Myanmar after crossing the border to work on rubber plantations.
Wunna Maung Lwin took the issue into consideration and would investigate the case, Thani said.
The two ministers also acknowledged a consultation between chiefs of the Thailand-Myanmar Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) and wanted body to resume their negotiations on boundary demarcation soon.
