Motorola unveils its first phones under Google management

New York - Motorola unveiled its first smartphones Wednesday since its takeover by Google - three models of its Razr family that it hopes will emulate the success of the original Razr clamshell model from 2004.

The cheapest version of the new phones, the Droid Razr M, will launch on Verizon, the largest US network, at a price of 99 dollars, less than half the price of an iPhone.
The phone, which runs on Google's Android operating system, features a 4.3-inch screen compared to the 3.5-inch screen on the iPhone, even though the body of both phones is around the same size.
The Razr M will be in stores next week, with two more sophisticated models, the Razr HD and the Razr Maxx HD going on sale later this year.
The Motorola launch came just hours after Nokia announced two new phones based on Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 software, and a week before a press event at which Apple is expected to announce its eagerly awaited iPhone 5 in advance of the holiday buying season.//DPA
