The announcement came as the South Korean electronics giant fights a worldwide patent lawsuit against Apple, whose fabled iPhone line is threatened by the success of the Galaxy series.
Apple won a 1 billion dollar US jury verdict against Samsung last month, which Samsung is in the process of appealing, but Apple lost a similar case in Japan. Apple has petitioned the court in the US for a sales injunction on the Galaxy S III.
The Galaxy S III boasts a 4.8-inch display, and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It features an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and1.9-megapixel front-facing one, and is now, according to the statement, the company's best-selling phone ever.
"The Galaxy S III has enjoyed tremendous attention and popularity since its launch in May, and we are thrilled with its success," JK Shin, president and head of Samsung's IT and mobile communications division, said in a statement. "We will never stop providing the latest smart mobile technologies to help users live a life extraordinary." Earlier this year, Samsung ousted Nokia as the top phone maker inthe world for the first time in 14 years.//DPA
