Suthep survives impeachment vote

Veteran Democrat Suthep Thaugsuban survived impeachment in the Senate yesterday with only 40 senators voting against him, when 88 votes were needed to kick him out of politics.

In the secret ballot held yesterday, 95 senators voted in favour of Suthep, three abstained and one refused to cast a ballot.
The National Anti-Corruption Commission had asked the Senate to impeach Suthep on charges that he had abused his authority as deputy prime minister in the previous government by asking the then-culture minister to appoint some Democrat MPs and party members to work for the ministry.
