Berry pickers' income to be guaranteed

Labour Minister Phadermchai Sasomsap said Monday that employment agencies should ensure that an income of at least Bt100,000 is guaranteed for workers who go to Sweden and Finland to pick berries during the annual berry-picking season from July to Septemb

Phadermchai said he had sent Employment Department chief Pravit Khiangpol along with director of the Office of Overseas Employment Administration to speak to ambassadors from the two countries and have them ensure that workers are only hired via income-guaranteeing firms. The minister, who recently visited 5,000 Thai workers at five berry-picking camps in the two nations, said if the negotiation was successful, then the income-guarantee scheme should be in place by next year. He also plans to propose that Thai workers be hired to plant trees in Finland.
