Court rejects Rajprasong businesses' riots lawsuit

The Civil Court Friday rejected a lawsuit filed by a group of Rajprasong business operators against the Army, the Defence Ministry and eight redshirt leaders demanding compensation of Bt300 million for damages caused by riots on May 19, 2010.
The suit was filed by Nutchatip Banchonsilp, other Rajprasong vendors and four companies.
The suit named the Army, the Defence Ministry, Deputy Agriculture Minister Natthawut Saikua, Jatuporn Promphan, Arisman Pongruangrong and five other redshirt leaders as defendants.
The plaintiffs asked the court to order the defendants to pay compensation for damages caused by fires that broke out after the previous government deployed troops to crack down on redshirt protesters at the Rajprasong Intersection.
The court ruled that witnesses for the plaintiffs testified that the blazes erupted after troops blocked the demonstrators from entering the area, so it was not known whether the blazes were caused by the protesters or government officials.
