Chiang Mai flights alert for lanterns

Chiang Mai International Airport is advising airlines to adjust schedules during the Loy Krathong Festival from November 27 to 29 to avoid floating lanterns that are a big part of the North's celebration of the holiday.

Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and Nok Air will stop all flights near Chiang Mai by 6.30pm. But some foreign carriers have flights landing after 9.30pm, and these timetables could not be adjusted.
Fears are that a yi-peng or floating hot-air lantern could be sucked into a jet engines, and cause major damage.
Airport director Rawiwan Netrakawessana said yesterday that the airport has prepared safety measures during Loy Krathong, and has asked the public’s cooperation to not release the lanterns until after 9.30pm.
