The Thai Automotive Industry Club had set itself a target of manufacturing 2 million units for the year, but exceeded the target this month, said Payungsak Chartsutipol, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries.
"The club has now set itself a target of manufacturing 3 million units a year within five years," Payungsak said.
Thailand is now ranked as the 10-largest vehicle manufacturer worldwide and sixth-largest exporter of vehicles and automotive parts, he said. The automotive industry accounts for about 10 percent of gross domestic product.
Foreign earnings this year from automotive exports have exceeded 1 trillion baht (32.6 billion dollars), Payungsak said.//DPA
