Labour Minister Phadermchai Sasomsap yesterday ordered the Social Security Office and the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare to study amending the law so that off-system workers can continue enjoying social-welfare benefits until they reach the age of 60.
Article 40 of the Social Security Act currently allows such workers to subscribe to and receive benefits until 55.
Already 1.2 million people are self-insured under Article 40 and Phadermchai wants 1.4 million more workers in the informal economy to protect themselves next year.
