Pope Benedict XVI sends first tweets

Three hours ago, Pope Benedict XVI of the Catholic Church sent out the first tweet from his official Twitter account.

 

Through @Pontifex, the Pope started his first tweet, saying "Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart."
Three hours after the message was sent, it generated over 31,000 retweets. The tweet was also marked as "favourites" by 9,900 tweeples.
The number of followers at 8.39pm is 758,410. 
For an hour, he sent out three tweets. The other two are:
"How can we celebrate the Year of Faith better in our daily lives?"
"By speaking with Jesus in prayer, listening to what he tells you in the Gospel and looking for him in those in need."
