Australia eases sanctions on Myanmar as president visits

Sydney - President Thein Sein became the first Myanmar head of state to visit Australia since 1974 and was rewarded Monday for his political and economic reforms with an easing of sanctions.

"My visit to Australia is one I've looked forward to for a very long time," Thein Sein said after a meeting with Prime Minister Julia Gillard in Canberra during a three-day visit.

Gillard announced changes that would lead to more military cooperation but stopped short of allowing sales of military equipment.

A defence attache would be posted in Myanmar along with a trade commissioner.//DPA
