FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 2013

Yangon - Japan on Friday doubled its donation to food assistance in Myanmar via the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), the UN agency said.

Ambassador Mikio Numata oversaw the donation of 2 billion yen (21 million dollars) to the WFP office in Naypyitaw.

Last year, Japan donated 10 million dollars to the UN agency.

WFP Myanmar Director Carlos Veloso said Japan's donation will allow the WFP to purchase food for 250,000 people for six months, with the priority given to operations in conflict areas such as the Rakhine and Kachin states.//DPA
