Likely candidates to replace Charupong are Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s adviser Bhokin Bhalakula and former interior minister Chidchai Vanasatidya, the source said.
Another source said Yingluck’s sister and new MP for Chiang Mai Yaowapa Wongsawat had also showed an interest in the post.
“But the likelihood [of Yaowapa filling the post] is small, because she could draw attacks by opposition parties and critics,” the source said.
Since becoming prime minister, Yingluck has reshuffled her Cabinet every six months, with the most recent occurring in October. Apart from the Interior portfolio, other ministerial posts are also expected to see changes.
