Nikkei closes above 15,000 points for first time in five years

Tokyo - Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average closed above the 15,000 mark for the first time in more than five years Wednesday, buoyed by the weakening of the yen against the dollar and gains on Wall Street.

The Nikkei gained 337.61 points, or 2.29 per cent, to end at 15,096.03. It was the first time the Nikkei had closed above the psychologically important 15,000 mark since December 28, 2007.

The broader-based Topix index was up 22.05 points, or 1.79 per cent, at 1,252.85.
