Civil groups oppose Egat power plants

Civil society groups opposed to four coal power plants planned by Egat in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang and Krabi hosted a seminar yesterday on the region's power demand and affirmed their stance to reject the use coal.

Meanwhile, residents in Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Hua Sai district will host a major protest on June 29. Egat plans to build at least two plants in Hua Sai and Krabi as part of its plan for nine 700-megawatt plants in the South, Tha Sala conservation group chief Songwuth Patkaew said.
Songwuth said Egat was prepared to import coal from Indonesia and Australia, so the south was convenient. He said power plants would facilitate heavy industry in the region, especially petrochemicals.
