Pope John Paul II set for sainthood in December, report says

Vatican City - Pope John Paul II is set to become a saint in December, an Italian news report said Tuesday, indicating a Catholic Church committee had approved the move.

A panel of cardinals and bishops, backing previous findings by theologians, attributed the second of two miracles needed to become a saint to the late pontiff, saying it took place May 1, 2011 - the day he was beatified, the ANSA news agency reported.

No details about the second miracle were given.

The decision means that John Paul II is one step away from sainthood. Pope Francis was expected to put the final seal of approval on his canonization with a papal decree and set a date for it.

Cardinals and bishops suggested it should take place in December, but there may be a "surprise," ANSA said.

The Catholic Church has adopted fast-lane procedures for the Polish-born Karol Wojtyla, who died in 2005 after 27 years as pope.

He was beatified after a first miracle was attributed to him, the curing of a nun from Parkinson's disease.//DPA
