Thai embassy on standby to evacuate 2,000 Thais

Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul said on Thursday that should it be necessary, the Thai embassy in Cairo would be prepared to evacuate Thais living in Egypt.

He said there are about 2,000 Thais in the country, most of them students and they are returning to Thailand during the school break.
Surapong advised Thais to avoid areas of mass gatherings in order to reduce possible risks.
He added that there have been no reports that any Thai has been harmed by Egypt’s unrest.
All of the some 200 Thai workers in Egypt are reported to be safe, according to Pravit Khiengpol, directorgeneral of the Department of Employment. He said that the agency was closely following developments in Egypt and would arrange for evacuation of the labourers if the situation became unsafe.
Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday that the Thai government should take the latest power seizure in Egypt as a lesson. He said that such an incident could happen in developing democracies where the rulers exceed the legal limit of their authority.
