MoU on witness protection measures

The Royal Thai Police and the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on providing protection for witnesses in graft cases.

NACC president Panthep Klanarongran said his agency wanted the police to provide protection so more witnesses will be encouraged to give information on cases related to corruption. He added that the measure needs to be discussed further as witnesses need to be kept safe after an arrest warrant has been issued for the suspect and while the suspect is in custody prior to trial.
The MoU states that a coordination unit between the two agencies must be set up. NACC is responsible for sending the witness’s names and request for protection for a certain period. Using funds provided by the NACC, the police is expected to provide effective protection to the witnesses. Operational reports are to be prepared every six months.
