Hand foot mouth disease claims 18,000 victims

A number of 18,181 people were infected by the hand foot mouth disease in the past six months, according to the Public Health Ministry.
There was no death case, said Public Health Minister Pradit Sintawanarong.
Seventy four per cent were children aged below 3 years.
He said that by number, the situation is not worse than last year's. However, the number of patients rose 1-2 months prematurely due to more rain and high humidity.
Enterovirus that causes the infection grows well in cool-damp weather and confined space. As such, children at kindergartens and nurseries are prone to the infection.
