Drug-allergy tests a world first

Thai researchers have developed genetic tests to eight medicines among the Food and Drug Administration's top-10 list of drugs known to cause allergic reactions among Thais.

Prof Dr Wasant Chantratit said researchers from the Public Health Ministry’s Department of Medical Sciences and Ramathibodi Hospital developed allergy tests for anti-epileptic drugs Carbamazepine, Phenobarbital and Phenytoin; gout-treatment Allopurinol; and anti-HIV drugs Nevirapine, Efavirenz, Abacavir and Starvudine.
Wasant said this genetic testing, the first of its kind in the world, would be presented at the Asean Life Sciences Conference and Exhibition 2013 from tomorrow to Friday. Twenty people will be selected to get allergy tests for free at the event. “Thailand Pharmacogenomics and Personalised Medicine: Present and Future” forum is open to public on Thursday.
