Reds demand resignation of rights commissioners

A pro-government red shirt network on Wednesday rallied at the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and called on members to resign en masse for its "distorted" conclusion on the 2010 political protest.

Pongpisit Kongsena, alias Lek Bandon, leader of the People’s Power Alliance, spoke through a loudspeaker, claminng the commissioners tarnished their own reputation for its latest report on the political rally by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) on in May 2010.
He said the NHRC’s report was in favour of then prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his deputy Suthep Thaugsuban who were “shielded” from offences despite their violations of human rights.
They said the NHRC was obliged to protect the people’s rights  but its members failed to fulfill their commitments.
They submitted a batch of resignation letters and applications as members of the Democrat Party to the NHRC members. Mr Abhisit and Mr Suthep are Democrat MPs.
Kanchai Kongsaneh, NHRC deputy secretary general, received the protesters’ letter and promised to forward it to the commission.

The protesters gave the NHRC 15 days to announce their resignations and threatened to take “the next step” if the commissioners insist on staying in power. They did not elaborate. The protesters finally dispersed without any violence.
