Ubon Ratchathani Governor Wanchai Suthivorachai was transferred to the Interior Ministry following a voice clip.
Interior Minister Jarupong Ruangsuwan confirmed on Saturday that the transfer order was approved, taking effect on August 26. Still, the effective period is not yet finalised. It could last 3-7 days, depending on Interior Permanent Secretary Vibul Sanguanpong's judgement, he said.
The order was issued following the release of the clip, allegedly featuring the governor's voice. In the clip, the man called for a special payment from "Nhoi", a subcontractor.
Wanchai has denied the allegation, saying that it was edited.
An investigation is under way. Due to the scandal, Wanchai's supporters are on street to show their supports, while some protesters also showed up.
He still maintains the provincial governorship during the investigation period.
