A man was killed and another was seriously injured when unknown assailants fired into a group of rubber grower protesters in Nakhon Si Thammarat province early Sunday morning.
The victim was identified as Sirichai Boonwong, 30, who was announced dead from gunshot wounds near his eye and chest at the hospital while Sithisak Chaingam, 28, was in critical condition after being shot at his neck and chest. Both were security guards of the protest.
The incident angered the protesters who condemned police, saying they could not protect them.
Provincial governor Wirote Jiwarangsan said the authorities have no policy to crackdown on the protesters but expressed concerned that some ill-intentioned group would try to set up incident to escalate the protest.
The protesters are protesting against the government’s failure to increase price of rubber to the promised price.
