Charoon won with 5-4 votes against the other nominated candidate Chalermpon Ake-uru.
After the vote, the newly elected president said he would conduct his constitutional and legal duties to serve the public as well as the highest interest of the nation.
Charoon, 69, graduated from Thammasat University’s Faculty of Law and got a master’s degree in arts from Ramkhamhaeng University. Previously, he was deputy chief justice of the Appeals Court Region 1 and a Supreme Court judge, plus a Supreme Administrative Court judge before he was elected by Supreme Administrative Court judges to be a Constitutional Court judge.
The Constitutional Court will hold its weekly meeting at 9.30am today and will consider a petition by appointed Senator Paibul Nititawan and chief opposition whip Jurin Laksanavisit against amendments to Article 154 on the election and qualification of senators.
The latest judge nominated to the court, Twekiat Menakanist, took part in the voting, but he will not join the meeting today as his appointment has yet to be endorsed by a royal command.
