The council of rectors held a meeting at Chulalongkorn University at noon and came up with a resolution to offer to mediate the conflicts between the two sides.
The meeting was attended by rectors of 26 universities. The council has 27 member universities.
Those attending the meeting included Prof Somkid Lertpaitoon, rector of Thammasat University, who serves as president of the council, Prof Pirom Kamolratanakul, rector of Chulalongkorn University, Assoc Prof Chalermchai Boonyaleephan, rector of Srinakharinwirot University, and Prof Ratchata Ratchatanawin, rector of Mahidol University.
Somkid said the current political landscape was changing very fast and could lead to violence, thus the CUPT decided to issue its second statement on the political situation.
In the statement, the CUPT reminded the government to be responsible and be sincere in solving the country’s problems and prevent violence.
The statement also called on all sides to use their conscience and intelligence in trying to solve problems and to avoid all kinds of violence.
Somkid said the CUPT feared that violence could occur because both the opponents and the government had enlisted a lot of supporters to rally. Should they fail to control the situation, this could lead to clashes.
The CUPT meeting resolved that the two sides should hold a meeting with the CUPT acting as a mediator.
