Actual Haiyan death toll clarified

New York (dpa) - The actual death toll from Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines is at about 3,600, said John Ging, director of the Operational Division at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Friday.

Ging said that Thursday's figure of 4,460 was an estimate released by the Philippine government. However, the verified number of dead is currently lower, at 3,600.
"We've been asked by the Philippine authorities to report consistent with them: they are not reporting estimates, they are reporting actual numbers," Ging said.
Ging apologised for the UN not clarifying that Thursday's number was an estimate.
