Girl hanged and allegedly raped in India's Uttar Pradesh

THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 2014

New Delhi - A 16-year-old girl died after being hanged from a tree in northern India, news reports said Thursday, in the latest such incident in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The girl's family said she was raped before being killed.
The incident comes a little over a week after two teenage cousins were gang-raped and left hanging from a tree in Badaun district of the same state, just a two-hour drive away.
Police said the 16-year-old went missing from her house Wednesday night, IANS news agency reported.
A post-mortem is to be carried out to ascertain if the girl had been sexually assaulted.
It is the fourth hanging reported in Uttar Pradesh in the past two weeks, and one of a string of alleged crimes against women there.
On Wednesday, a 45-year-old woman was hanged from a tree near the state's border with Nepal.
In the state's Hamirpur district a woman alleged she had been gang-raped by four officers at a police station, where she had gone to seek the release of her arrested husband, NDTV reported Thursday.
The woman said she was raped when she refused to pay a bribe for releasing her husband.
One police officer has been arrested, the report said.
