The raids led by police, soldiers and anti-narcotics agents were part of a major crackdown under the military’s policy to tackle trade in illegal drugs, Permpong Chaowalit, secretary-general of the Office of Narcotics Control Board, said.
The five measures implemented under the National Council for Peace and Order’s policy are blocking border areas conducive to drug trade, hunting down government officials who may be involved, ending drug trade in jail, blocking areas where trade volume is high and blocking high-risk areas, he said. The crackdown will end in September, with the objective of seeing a significant drop in drug dealing.
In yesterday’s crackdown involving 1,120 personnel, 30 small-time traders and 87 users were arrested and 60,000 amphetamine tablets, a kilogram of cocaine, several other types of drugs and cash was seized and bank accounts frozen.
