Tremors in North as 4.8 quake hits Mae Suay district

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit Chiang Rai's Mae Suay district at dawn yesterday, Sawang Momdee, an official with the provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office, said. There were no reports of casualties.

The seismology office of the Meteorological Department said the tremors were felt in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai provinces at 5.32am. The quake, whose epicentre was reported to be about 6 kilometres below ground in forested land in Ban Doi Lan in tambon Wawi, slightly damaged some houses in the area, while some homes affected in a previous quake developed more cracks.
Sawang said he had instructed officials to survey the damage and watch out for a possible mudslide in the wake of heavy downpours.
