Agencies such as the Metropolitan Police, Highways Police and the Highways Department will be working together in the new command.
“It’s necessary that we have an agency to oversee the overall picture of the country’s traffic affairs,” Adul said.
Bangkok has long been notorious for its traffic, though as urban development spreads further, bad traffic is affecting other big cities too.
Commenting on the state of traffic in Bangkok, Adul said agencies now agreed that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) should cut the number of street-stall zones to no more than 250.
These stalls often slow down traffic as motorists stop to pick up items, he said.
“The BMA has allocated some Bt30 million for high-tech equipment that should allow a better flow of traffic,” Adul said.Such devices included lane-changing detectors.
