Sommai to attend WB-IMF conference in US

Finance Minister Sommai Pasee will lead a Thai delegation to the annual World Bank and International Monetary Fund (WB-IMF) meeting in the United States.

The meeting will take place between this Thursday to Sunday at the WB-IMF headquarters in Washington D.C. Prior to the meeting, Sommai will attend the THAI-Forum in New York on Wedensday to strengthen American investors’ confidence.
The WB-IMF meeting will involve Boards of Governors from 188 member countries with a “twin goal” agenda of creating stability amidst global inequality while addressing the challenges and the role of the World Bank in combating poverty. Sommai will deliver a speech about the economic situation in Thailand and his view on the WB-IMF’s role in the global economy.
Furthermore, he is scheduled to join his counterparts from 9 Asean countries along with the IMF’s executive board to discuss the economic development of the Asean region and its cooperation with the IMF.
At this occasion, Sommai will partake in the signing of the Asean+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO); the three additional members being China, Japan and South Korea. The purpose of the agreement is to elevate the status of AMRO to become an international economic monitoring organization within AMRO members. The move is also aimed at developing the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralization, CMIM, into an essential aid unit in the region.

The Finance Minister also plans to meet with top officials from notable banking institutions such as Standard Chartered Bank, Barclays Bank, HSBC to inform them of Thailand’s economic and political situation as well as showcasing the Thai government’s policies in developing the nation.
