French economist wins Nobel Prize

Stockholm (dpa) - Jean Tirole, of Toulouse 1 University Capitole inFrance, is awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics "for his analysis of market power and regulations," the committee says.

Using a mathematical approach called game theory, Tirole has considered questions regarding monopolies, preventing abuse of market power and incentivising competition among oligopolists "more than deeply than any economist before him," the committee says.
The French economist says he is "very honoured" and "moved" upon winning the 2014 Nobel Prize in Economics. Tirole was speaking from Toulose, France, on the telephone to reporters at the Nobel ceremony in Stockholm.
