The 6.3-km route is built along a road parallel to a railway in Phra Phrome district, stretching from Pho Sadej to tambon Na Phru in the countryside with rice paddies nearby. After the recent inauguration, it has been used by hundreds of cyclists every dawn and dusk.
Attendants are deployed between 4am and 7am to ensure extra safety, and a speed limit will be soon imposed on the road the bike lane is built along, provincial governor Pheerasak Hinmuangkao said.
Pheerasak said dedicated bike lanes would be introduced in 10 other provinces, but he did not name them or say when they would eventuate.
Traffic signs would be installed at more locations to alert motorists to the bike lane, which was initiated a year ago by former public health minister Witthaya Kaewparadai, former MP Narisa Adithepworraphan, and private media owner Nonthiwat Nonthaphak.
