Speedboat driver faces new charge after South Korean tourists' bodies discovered

Police have filed an additional charge of reckless action leading to deaths against the driver of a speedboat that crashed into a fishing boat on Sunday off Koh Phi Phi in Krabi province, injuring several people and killing two tourists.

Muang Krabi Police superintendent Pol Colonel Pruettipong Nuchanart said yesterday that after the South Korean tourists’ bodies were discovered on Tuesday evening, police filed an additional charge against speedboat driver Surat Mas-osot, 36, and objected to any requests for bail.
The bodies of the two tourists will be returned to South Korea tonight.
In related news, speedboat operator Nirut Witchapin said yesterday that his company would take care of all 35 injured tourists, including the cost of accommodation pending their return flights. Medical expenses, meanwhile, will be covered by two insurance companies – one of which will pay each injured victim Bt15,000 and Bt100,000 for each deceased victim, while the other will pay Bt1 million for the dead and up to Bt500,000 to the injured persons. Nirut said the company had also apologised to the families of the two deceased on Tuesday.
