Study offers answers for poisoned Klity Creek

Solutions to rehabilitate lead-contaminated Klity Creek in Kanchanaburi province will be proposed to the Pollution Control Department (PCD) soon.

Proposals by a study team from Khon Kaen University and related agencies were discussed yesterday in a meeting observed by independent organisation representatives.
The study team suggested three areas for rehabilitation - the mineral pit, the landfill of mineral-laced soil, and the contaminated creek.
The rehabilitation could take five to 20 years, said Associate Professor Thares Srisati, who led the team.
Thares said the area, a mineral potential source, was bound to have contamination. He said methods to eradicate lead contamination could include natural rehabilitation, a pit-closing method or composite dredging, or a mix of both.
The team would also take in opinions from independent agencies and villagers before submitting a proposal for solutions to the PCD, he said.
