Thammasat English test to be available via computer tests

The Thammasat University General English Test (TU-GET) - widely used to test English knowledge of not just students but also people from various career backgrounds - will be available via computer-based testing services from February 2015.

“Up until now, all tests had been conducted on paper,” Associate Professor Dr Supong Tangkiengsirisin said in his capacity as director of the Language Institute at Thammasat.
The institute has long conducted the TU-GET on a monthly basis. It has described the transition to computer-based tests as a move needed to fulfil its vision that its services conform to international standards.
The internationally recognised Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), for example, has long used computer-based testing services.
“TU-GET will cover listening, speaking and writing and LITU will conduct this new model of testing at the Learning Centre at Thammasat University’s Rangsit Campus in February 2015,” Supong said.
He said the institute would also offer TU-STEPS – Thammasat University Standardised Test for English Professional Skills – to measure the English proficiency of |people working in any professional area.
“This test is offered for members of the public who are interested in assessing their English skills necessary for their work. It is also suitable as a test of English proficiency for corporate employees working in international settings,” Supong noted.
TU-STEPS will enable test takers to measure their English proficiency for their career according to international standards.
According to Sompong, the institute is preparing to launch new courses and develop English language training for various professions to support the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 as well.
The institute has already conducted four international graduate degree programmes: International Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in English Language Teaching (PhD-ELT), Master of Arts programme in English for Careers, Master of Arts programme in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (MA-TEFL), and Graduate Diploma Programme in English for Careers.
“We have been a leading international institute with expertise in teaching and in academic services and which has conducted research into the English language for almost 30 years,” he said.
