A senior Fine Arts Department (FAD) official and chief archaeologist, Phayung Wongnoi, said the 334 horseshoes were in good condition and were perhaps never used.
Phayung said it was possible they were made in the initial Rattanakosin period (1782–1932), judging by the 16 holes punched in two rows on each horseshoe – corresponding with general use in that era. Full excavation of the site inside Rom cave will begin soon, possibly next week, with a further survey of the area needed before FAD archaeologists could begin full-scale work. The survey cannot be done now because of high seas and bad weather.
