Universal civil registration coming for Asia Pacific

A ministerial declaration due this week paves the way for universal civil registration for all births, deaths, marriages and other life events in the Asia Pacific by 2024, it was announced on Thursday at a press conference at Bangkok's United Nations Conf

With 135 million Asia Pacific children under five years old currently living without a birth certificate, civil registration is deemed an important issue as it provides the legal documents that are essential for establishing identity and family relationships.
It has fundamental implications for a wide range of ensuing rights.
The five-day 1st Ministerial Conference on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics, which finishes today at the United Nations Conference Centre, has brought together the ministers of interior, justice, health and planning.
It has also attracted senior representatives of national statistical systems and their development partners in a bid to strengthen a high-level commitment to improving data collection, analysis and use.
