3 killed, one hurt in South attacks

Three people were killed and one injured as separatist violence continued in the deep South.

A 52-year-old woman, identified as Jehmenoh Sani, was shot dead early yesterday as she was riding a motorcycle in Narathiwat’s Rangae district. Initial investigation showed that the villager from Rangae’s tambon Chalerm had left her home at about 6am to buy some food, when two men following her on another motorbike shot her twice before fleeing. She died immediately. Police put the attack down to insurgency.
At about 6.30am yesterday, police in Pattani’s Thung Yang Daeng district learned that the district’s former assistant kamnan, A-wae Ji, 50, had been fatally shot in the torso and head. His motorcycle was found at the scene. The victim was heading to a teashop when his attackers opened fire.
In the third incident, insurgents ambushed two village defence volunteers riding on a motorcycle along Lammai-Lampraya Road in Yala’s Muang district at about 11.30pm on Wednesday. They were believed to be heading home. Wirote Ponpadung, 20, died immediately, while Pakorn Suwan got away with injuries after he jumped off the bike and ran for his life. Police blamed insurgents, but did not rule out personal conflict.
